The Academic Medical Centre (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) AMC

The Academic Medical Center (AMC) is a prominent medical centre in the Netherlands as well as one of the largest hospitals. Annually more than 26,000 patients are admitted to the AMC and the outpatient clinic serves about 300,000 patients.

The AMC complex houses the university hospital and the medical faculty of the University of Amsterdam, as well the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research, the medical department of the Royal Tropical Institute and the Dutch Ophthalmic Research Institute. Also a number of biotech companies are located on the premises.

This concentration of expertise makes the AMC ‘more than just a university hospital’ and provides a breeding ground for fruitful scientific collaboration.

In the care for patients the Academic Medical Centre aims at a transition to Evidence Based Medicine (EBM).

Therefore in 2006 the Amsterdam Centre for Evidence Based Practice (AmCEPB) was founded.

It aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of health care through:

Bullet Stimulation and innovation of EBP-activities.

Bullet Make the concept of EBP more transparent and spread it.

Bullet Make knowledge available through education and support.

Bullet Support the medical centre in using EBP.

The AmCEPB is a collaboration of various departments within the AMC, all with their specific activities and expertise:

Bullet The Dutch Cochrane Centre, which represents the Cochrane Collaboration in The Netherlands, Belgium
(Dutch speaking part), Surinam, and the Netherlands' Antilles.

Bullet The Department Clinical Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (KEBB).

Bullet The Amsterdam School of Health Professionals (ASHP).

Bullet The Medical Library.

Bullet The Department Quality and Process Innovation, especially the unit Evidence Based Practice.

Next to the AmCEPB, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of the AMC has a notable role in this EU-EBM project.
